Die erste Generation kam im Jahr 1974 in den Handel; das Design stammt von Italdesign Giugiaro. Der aktuelle VW Golf VIII baut seit der siebten Generation auf dem Modularen Querbaukasten, der mittlerweile auch zahlreichen anderen Marken- und Konzernmodellen als technische Basis dient. Im Laufe der Generationen zeichnete sich der Kompakte durch ein stetig gewachsenes Platzangebot aus. Zudem wurde das Angebot an Assistenzsystemen kontinuierlich erweitert. Leichtbaumaßnahmen nehmen bei der Entwicklung eine wachsende Rolle ein. So ist der VW Golf VII im Vergleich zu seinem Vorgänger um bis zu 100 Kilogramm leichter geworden. Die achte Golf-Generation geht seit Ende 2019 mit einem umfassend modernisierten Infotainmentsystem, einem 48-Volt-Bordnetz und fünf wählbaren Hybridantrieben an den Start. Eine reine Elektrovariante wie in der siebten Generation wird es dafür nicht mehr geben. Diese Rolle nimmt der ID.3 ein.Seinen Namen verdankt der VW Golf übrigens einer Meeresströmung im Atlantik. Es gibt ihn nicht nur als Drei- und Fünftürer, sondern in verschiedenen Karosserievarianten: die mittlerweile eingestellte Hochdach-Version nennt sich "Golf Plus", die ebenfalls nicht mehr verfügbare, geländegängige Variante heißt "Cross-Golf". Auch Cabrios stellte Volkswagen her. Das Sportmodell GTI gibt es bereits seit der ersten Generation, sportliche Speerspitze ist seit der vierten Generarion aber der sechszylindrige R32, ab Generation sechs der Golf R mit Turbo-Vierzylinder.

Der VW Golf ist Namensgeber der Kompakt-Klasse. Das wichtigste und erfolgreichste Volumenmodell der Wolfsburger läuft inzwischen in seiner achten Generation vom Band.

Der schnellste Serien-Volkswagen aller Zeiten

Der Golf GTI Edition 50 ist der stärkste Seriengolf den es je gab - und auch der schnellste auf der Nordschleife. Den 20,832 Kilometer langen Kurs absolvierte das 325 PS Starte Model in 7:46:13. Das macht ihn zum schnellsten Serien-VW auf dem Nürburgring.

Not yet on the market and already a record holder: Discover the all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI EDITION 50, the most powerful and fastest production GTI model to date! The near-production test vehicle, driven by racing driver Benny Leuchter, set the record for the fastest Volkswagen production vehicle yet at Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 07:46:13. Due to challenging weather conditions, only one record attempt was possible, making this achievement even more remarkable.  
 
Join us as we explore what makes the Golf GTI EDITION 50 a true track legend, and get ready for its world premiere on June 20, 2025, at the 24-hour race at Nürburgring. This exclusive anniversary model will feature exceptional performance elements, including an optional Performance package, which includes a performance chassis and particularly lightweight 19-inch semi-slick tyres from @bridgestoneEMEA which have been specially developed for the car. 

Important to note: For earlier communicated lap times of other models, the timed lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife started flying in front of grandstand T13. The start and finish for the measurement were at the beginning and end of the grandstand, respectively; the approximately 200 meters in between were not counted. The official lap time of 07:46:13 for the Golf GTI EDITION 50 includes this distance. For better comparison, this video includes the official record lap time and the time for the formerly used distance.
